What to know about studying in Canada

Student visas for Vietnamese citizens

IRCC open data: 9,715 Vietnamese citizens had a study permit take effect in 2025 (10,500 in 2024; 5,000 in January–July 2026). IRCC processed 6,025 new study permit applications from Vietnamese citizens in 2025 (9,205 in 2024); this counts approved, refused and withdrawn applications together, and IRCC does not publish approval rates by country. IRCC figures are rounded to the nearest 5.

Working after graduation

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): programs of 2 years or more (such as a bachelor's) can lead to a permit of up to 3 years. Bachelor's graduates are NOT subject to the PGWP field-of-study requirement. Since 1 November 2024, applicants must show English at CLB 7 (or French NCLC 7) in all four skills.

Proof of funds

Applications from 1 September 2026: show CAD 23,448 per year in living costs for one person (outside Quebec), NOT counting tuition or travel. Applications from 1 January 2025 to 31 August 2026 used CAD 22,895.

“Quotas”

Canada caps study permits: for 2026 IRCC expects to issue up to 408,000 permits, including 155,000 for newly arriving students. Bachelor's students still need a provincial attestation letter (PAL/TAL; a CAQ in Quebec); from 1 January 2026 only master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt.
