empirical formulaVietnamese: công thức thực nghiệm
Còn gọi:Also called: công thức đơn giản nhất · công thức tối giản

An empirical formula is a chemical formula that gives the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.
Intuition: Picture a fruit basket holding 2 oranges for every 1 apple. The empirical formula is like recording the ratio "2 oranges : 1 apple" without saying how many pieces of fruit the basket contains in total.
The empirical formula expresses the simplest atom ratio among the elements in a compound. Starting from masses or mass percentages, convert the amount of each element to moles, divide every value by the smallest number of moles, and then scale the result to the smallest whole-number ratio.
Unlike a molecular formula, an empirical formula tells you nothing about the actual number of atoms in a molecule or about structure. Several different compounds can share the same empirical formula; if the molar mass of the molecule is known, you can find the whole-number multiplier that converts the empirical formula into the molecular formula.
Dùng khi biết công thức thực nghiệm và khối lượng mol phân tử để tìm hệ số nhân, rồi suy ra công thức phân tử.Use this when the empirical formula and the molecular molar mass are known: it gives the whole-number multiplier that leads to the molecular formula.

Mass ratios cannot be reduced directly into subscripts.
Mass does not count atoms. Convert each element's mass to moles first, then normalize the ratio.
An empirical formula must use the smallest whole-number subscripts.
Keep the unrounded mole values, divide them all by the smallest one, and multiply the whole ratio if needed. Finally, remove any common factor greater than .
An empirical formula does not determine the molecular formula uniquely.
Many substances can share the same simplest atom ratio. You also need the molar mass to find the whole-number multiplier and scale every subscript.
When the data are mass percentages, assume a g sample.
Each percentage then becomes that many grams, which is valid because the empirical formula depends only on ratios.
Do not round off ratios such as or right away.
After normalizing, multiply the entire ratio by one common factor to obtain whole-number subscripts.
