A run is a string of consecutive identical elements in an ordered sequence, bounded by an element of the other type or by the beginning or end of the sequence.
Trực giác: Hãy tưởng tượng một hàng cây ven đường: nếu ba cây thông đứng liền nhau rồi đến hai cây bàng rồi bốn cây thông nữa, mỗi đoạn cây cùng loại chính là một "chuỗi" — đếm số chuỗi giúp ta đoán người trồng cây có chọn vị trí ngẫu nhiên hay không.Intuition: Picture a row of trees along a road: three pines in a row, then two almond trees, then four more pines. Each stretch of same-species trees is one "run," and counting the runs hints at whether the planter chose positions at random.
A run is a maximal block of consecutive observations of the same type in a sequence taken in the order the observations occur. For a sequence of two types arranged at random, the expected number of runs can be computed from the number of elements of each type. Far fewer runs than expected suggests clustering, while too many runs suggests overly regular alternation. A runs test assesses randomness without assuming any particular population distribution. A run of length 1 still counts.
One long run does not prove that a sequence is non-random.
Genuinely random sequences often contain long runs, and suspiciously regular alternation is also evidence against randomness. Don't judge by eye alone.
A run of length 1 must still be counted.
A single isolated element, bounded by an observation of the other type or by the start or end of the sequence, meets the definition of a run.
When asked how unusual a sequence is, describe the simulation completely.
State the coding scheme, how you read the random digits, the stopping rule, the number of repetitions, and the proportion of simulated sequences with a run at least as long as the observed one; then answer in context.
