An electrode is an electrical conductor in contact with an electrolyte that gives up or takes in electrons during electrochemical processes.
Intuition: Think of an electrode as a transfer station: electrons are the passengers, and they must step onto the metal platform to move from the chemical route onto the wire route.
An electrode is a conductor, usually a metal or graphite, placed in contact with an electrolyte so that electrons can pass between the external circuit and the reacting system. Oxidation always occurs at the anode and reduction always occurs at the cathode, regardless of the electrode's charge sign in a galvanic cell or an electrolytic cell.
An inert electrode simply provides a conducting surface on which other species react, while a metal electrode may itself dissolve or have material deposited on it. Electrodes make it possible to separate a redox reaction into two half-reactions that are connected through the circuit.
Do not identify the anode from the electrode's charge sign alone.
The anode is where oxidation occurs and the cathode is where reduction occurs. In a galvanic cell the anode is negative; in an electrolytic cell it is positive.
When a redox couple consists only of dissolved ions, an inert electrode merely conducts electrons.
The conversion takes place in solution, so you cannot assume that a metal plates onto the inert rod.
Write both half-reactions and label the anode and cathode before you calculate.
The species being oxidized identifies the anode; if a galvanic cell potential comes out negative, recheck which electrode plays which role.
In a galvanic cell with a salt bridge, electrons do not travel through the bridge.
Electrons flow from anode to cathode through the external circuit, while anions migrate toward the anode and cations toward the cathode.
