Univariate data are observations that record just one characteristic for each individual in a study.
Intuition: Picture weighing each student and asking nothing else — one person, one number, one story.
Univariate data consist of the values of a single variable measured on a set of individuals, where each observation may be a number or a label. A data table with many variables can still support a univariate analysis whenever the question asks about only one variable.
A univariate analysis describes the shape of the distribution, center, spread, and any outliers. For a quantitative variable, use the mean, median, and standard deviation along with a histogram, boxplot, or stemplot; for a categorical variable, use frequencies with a bar chart or pie chart.
A table with many columns can still be analyzed one variable at a time.
What matters is that the question looks at a single variable, not how many columns were collected.
Univariate data need not be quantitative.
A categorical variable is univariate too, so describe it with counts, relative frequencies, and a bar chart rather than a mean.
Side-by-side boxplots by group are not a purely univariate analysis.
The comparison involves one quantitative and one categorical variable, even though each group is described in univariate language.
Use SOCS to describe a quantitative variable.
Report shape, outliers, center, and spread with numbers and units; for a skewed distribution, favor the median and interquartile range.
Decide whether the prompt asks about one variable or a relationship between two.
"Describe the distribution" points to one variable, while "describe the relationship or association" points to two; tie every comment to the variable name, units, and context.
