Oxidation is the loss of electrons by a substance, which raises the oxidation number of that element in its compounds.

Trực giác: Hãy coi electron như viên bi mang điện tích âm — khi nguyên tử buông tay thả bi ra, bản thân nó trở nên dương hơn, giống hệt cách sự oxid hóa làm tăng số oxid hóa.Intuition: Picture electrons as negatively charged marbles — when an atom lets go of a marble, it becomes more positive, which is exactly how oxidation raises an oxidation number.

Oxidation is the process in which an atom, ion, or molecule gives up one or more electrons, so that the oxidation number of the corresponding element increases. The electrons released must be accepted by something else, so oxidation is always accompanied by reduction; the substance that is oxidized acts as the reducing agent.

When the electron transfer is not obvious, you can identify oxidation by an increase in oxidation number. Keep in mind, though, that oxidation numbers are a bookkeeping convention: in many covalent bonds the electrons are only pulled toward the more electronegative atom rather than transferred completely.

Oxidation does not require oxygen.

The defining signs are loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation number, and many oxidation reactions involve no oxygen at all.

A substance that is oxidized is the reducing agent.

It donates electrons and thereby causes another species to be reduced; "oxidized" names the change, "reducing agent" names the role.

An oxidation number that increases means oxidation, even if it stays negative.

Only the direction of change matters: −2-2 to −1-1 is an increase, and so is −1-1 to 00.

In the half-reaction method, write the electrons explicitly before combining the halves.

Multiply by coefficients so that the electrons lost equal the electrons gained.

When you identify the substance oxidized, state its oxidation number before and after.

The increase is the evidence for your conclusion, not just the name of the substance.

1787Antoine LavoisierLouis-Bernard Guyton de MorveauFriedrich Wöhler

Năm 1787, Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau và Antoine Lavoisier đặt tên sự oxi hoá để gọi quá trình chất kết hợp với oxygen.
In 1787, Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau and Antoine Lavoisier coined the term oxidation for the process of a substance combining with oxygen.
