A redox reaction is a chemical change in which electrons move from one substance to another, changing their oxidation numbers.

Intuition: Think of a transaction: whatever one person hands over, the other must take in. In a redox reaction, the currency being passed back and forth is electrons.

A redox reaction occurs when one substance gives up electrons and another takes them on: the oxidation number of an element increases in the species that is oxidized and decreases in the species that is reduced. The two processes always happen together, and the total number of electrons lost equals the total number gained.

To recognize a redox reaction, compare oxidation numbers before and after the reaction. The substance that donates electrons is the reducing agent; the one that accepts them is the oxidizing agent. A reaction that simply exchanges ions without changing any oxidation number is not a redox reaction.

An exchange of ions alone does not prove that a reaction is redox.

You must compare oxidation numbers on both sides; a strong acid or an escaping gas is not a criterion.

The substance that is oxidized is not the oxidizing agent.

A substance that is oxidized donates electrons, so its oxidation number rises and it acts as the reducing agent, while an oxidizing agent accepts electrons, drops in oxidation number, and is reduced.

"Reduction" does not mean a loss of mass or of atoms.

In a redox reaction, the species that is reduced gains electrons, so its oxidation number goes down.

Write out oxidation numbers whenever you have to identify a redox reaction.

Give the values on both sides and name the element whose number rises or falls; if the reaction is not redox, show that every oxidation number stays the same.

Balance half-reactions in the correct order.

Balance the main element first, then O with H2O\mathrm{H_2O}, H with H+\mathrm{H^+}, and charge with e−e^-. In basic solution, add OH−\mathrm{OH^-} to remove H+\mathrm{H^+}; finally scale the half-reactions so the electrons cancel.

cuối thế kỷ 18 (tên gọi "redox": 1928)Antoine-Laurent LavoisierJoseph PriestleyG.E. StahlLouis-Bernard Guyton de MorveauLeonor MichaelisLouis B. FlexnerLuigi GalvaniAlessandro Volta

Cuối thế kỷ 18, Joseph Priestley và Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier góp phần hình thành khái niệm nhằm thay thuyết nhiên tố khi giải thích sự cháy.
In the late 18th century, Joseph Priestley and Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier helped shape the concept as a replacement for the phlogiston theory in explaining combustion.
