partial pressureVietnamese: áp suất riêng phần
Còn gọi:Also called: partial pressures · áp suất phần · áp suất riêng phần của khí · partial pressure of a gas · áp suất riêng phần tại cân bằng · equilibrium partial pressure

Partial pressure is the pressure a gas in a mixture would exert on its own if it occupied the whole container, independent of the other gases.
Intuition: In a noisy classroom, each group's chatter adds to the overall noise level, and the larger the group, the bigger its share.
Partial pressure is the pressure one component of a gas mixture would exert if it alone occupied the same volume at the same temperature. For an ideal gas mixture, the total pressure equals the sum of the partial pressures, and each gas's pressure equals its mole fraction times the total pressure.
In the ideal gas model, at a fixed volume and temperature, a gas's partial pressure depends only on how many moles of that gas are present, not on its identity or molar mass. The model breaks down at very high pressures or very low temperatures.

Adding an inert gas to a rigid container does not raise the partial pressure of a gas already present.
At constant temperature, that gas still has the same moles in the same volume, so its partial pressure is unchanged; the total pressure rises and its mole fraction falls.
Never substitute total pressure for partial pressure in or .
If you are given only the total pressure and the composition of the mixture, convert to partial pressures using mole fractions before writing the expression.
Write the expression before plugging in numbers.
On free-response questions, state the relationship among partial pressure, mole fraction, and total pressure to show correct method.
Decide whether the container is rigid or fitted with a piston before drawing conclusions.
At constant temperature, adding gas to a rigid container raises the total pressure; with a piston holding the total pressure constant, the volume expands and the partial pressure of the original gas drops.
