The cathode is the electrode where reduction occurs — that is, where electrons are gained.

Intuition: Think of the cathode as an electron depot: every species that stops there picks up electrons and is reduced.

The cathode is the electrode that accepts electrons from the external circuit; there an oxidizing agent is reduced to a product with a lower oxidation number. A cathode is identified by the reduction half-reaction that occurs there, not by the sign of the electrode.

In a galvanic cell the cathode is the positive electrode, but in an electrolytic cell it is negative, because the external power supply pushes electrons into it.

The cathode is not always the positive electrode.

It is positive in a galvanic cell but negative in an electrolytic cell, where an external source supplies the electrons. Identify the cathode by where reduction happens, not by sign.

Do not pick the cathode from how reactive a metal is.

In a galvanic cell under standard conditions, the half-cell with the more positive standard reduction potential accepts electrons more readily and serves as the cathode.

Never add two standard reduction potentials together.

With both values written as reduction potentials, use Ecell∘=Ecathode∘−Eanode∘E^\circ_\text{cell}=E^\circ_\text{cathode}-E^\circ_\text{anode}. Multiplying a half-reaction to balance electrons does not change E∘E^\circ.

Label both half-reactions before you calculate anything.

Writing "reduction → cathode" and "oxidation → anode" keeps you from swapping the roles or flipping a sign in Ecell∘E^\circ_\text{cell}.

Deduce the half-reaction from what you observe.

If an electrode bubbles and turns phenolphthalein pink, the formation of H2\mathrm{H_2} and OH−\mathrm{OH^-} shows that water is being reduced, so that electrode is the cathode.

1834William WhewellMichael Faraday

In 1834, William Whewell coined the name "cathode" at Michael Faraday's request, to supply terminology for Faraday's paper on electrolysis.
