Control means holding constant the variables other than the treatment that could affect the response variable, so the treatment's effect can be isolated.
Trực giác: Kiểm soát giống như chụp cùng một cảnh với cùng ánh sáng, cùng góc máy, rồi chỉ thay ống kính — nhờ đó bạn biết chắc bức ảnh khác đi là do ống kính chứ không phải do mặt trời lặn.Intuition: Control is like photographing the same scene with the same light and the same camera angle and changing only the lens — then you know any difference in the picture comes from the lens, not from the sun going down.
Control in experimental design means creating a fair comparison by keeping factors other than the treatment steady, so they cannot act on the response variable. This cuts down unwanted variability and separates the treatment's effect from outside influences.
Control is not the same as randomization: one keeps conditions consistent, while the other assigns treatments by a chance mechanism. An experiment does need a comparison, but it does not necessarily need a group that receives no treatment.
Control is not randomization.
Control holds factors other than the treatment steady, while randomization uses a chance mechanism to assign treatments.
A control group is not required in every experiment.
What is required is a comparison; the treatments themselves can serve as benchmarks for one another.
Khi mô tả thiết kế, đừng chỉ viết “kiểm soát”.
Hãy nêu cụ thể yếu tố ngoài nghiệm thức nào được giữ giống nhau giữa các nhóm.
Trong thiết kế thí nghiệm, đừng nói kiểm soát làm mẫu đại diện hơn.
Giữ cố định yếu tố ngoài nghiệm thức giúp giảm biến thiên trong nhóm; tính đại diện phụ thuộc cách chọn mẫu.
When describing a design, do not just write "control." Name the specific non-treatment factors that are kept the same across the groups.
In experimental design, do not claim that control makes a sample more representative.
Holding non-treatment factors fixed reduces within-group variability; representativeness depends on how the sample is selected.
