Hình minh hoạ khái niệm tế bào điện hóa

Tế bào điện hóa là thiết bị tách phản ứng oxi hóa–khử thành hai nửa ở hai điện cực, buộc electron chạy qua mạch ngoài.An electrochemical cell is a device that separates a redox reaction into two half-reactions at two electrodes, forcing electrons to travel through an external circuit.

Intuition: It's like keeping water from running straight downhill and routing it through a turbine blade instead: you get the same overall process, but now you extract work from it rather than just heat.

An electrochemical cell is a device that arranges a redox reaction so that oxidation occurs at the anode, reduction occurs at the cathode, and electrons flow from anode to cathode through an external circuit. Ions migrate between the compartments to balance charge and keep the current flowing.

Under standard conditions, the cell potential equals the cathode reduction potential minus the anode reduction potential, and it does not change when the reaction coefficients are multiplied. For the reaction as written, a galvanic cell drives current on its own if this potential is positive; an electrolytic cell requires an external power source if it is negative.

Use the standard reduction potentials at the cathode and anode to find Ecell∘E^\circ_{cell}, then judge whether the reaction as written is spontaneous.

Never multiply a standard reduction potential by a balancing coefficient.

Reduction potential is an intensive quantity, so it stays the same when a half-reaction is scaled; only the number of moles of electrons nn used in energy calculations changes.

Not every electrochemical cell drives current by itself.

For the reaction as written under standard conditions, a galvanic cell has Ecell∘>0E^\circ_{cell}>0, while an electrolytic cell has Ecell∘<0E^\circ_{cell}<0 and needs an external power supply.

Don't flip the sign of the anode potential and subtract as well.

Either subtract two reduction potentials taken straight from the table, or reverse the sign for the oxidation half-reaction and add.

Determine nn before calculating ΔG∘\Delta G^\circ.

Take nn from the moles of electrons transferred in the balanced reaction, then check that your answer carries energy units.

When Ecell∘<0E^\circ_{cell}<0, state both halves of the conclusion.

For the reaction as written under standard conditions, ΔG∘>0\Delta G^\circ>0, so the reaction is thermodynamically unfavorable and an external power source is required.

1799Alessandro VoltaLuigi GalvaniMichael Faraday

The first electrochemical cell was announced in 1799 by the Italian scientist Alessandro Volta, building on earlier experiments by Luigi Galvani in Bologna; the electrochemical vocabulary we still use today was coined only in 1833, by Michael Faraday together with a few friends.
