Decay is the spontaneous process in which an unstable nucleus emits a particle or radiation and becomes a new nucleus.
Intuition: An unstable nucleus is like a wobbly tower of stacked blocks: it will fall at some unpredictable moment, but with millions of towers you can predict quite precisely how many collapse each minute.
Decay is the spontaneous process in which an unstable nucleus emits a particle or electromagnetic radiation and becomes a new nucleus. The common modes are alpha, beta, and gamma; gamma emission does not change the composition of the nucleus. The number of parent nuclei falls according to a first-order rate law, so the rate is proportional to the number of nuclei still present. Every isotope has its own decay constant and half-life, the half-life being the time required for half the nuclei in a sample to decay.
Use this to find how many nuclei remain, or to work back to the time from the amount remaining.

A plot of against time is not linear.
For first-order radioactive decay, versus is the straight line, with slope ; is positive and has units of inverse time.
The fraction decayed is not the fraction remaining.
Subtract the fraction decayed from , then compare the remaining fraction with or use the exponential equation.
Half-life does not depend on how much material you start with.
It is set only by , so a larger sample still takes the same time to fall to half.
The units of reveal a first-order decay problem.
When carries units of inverse time, the linear plot to choose is versus .
Keep your time units consistent.
If the units of differ from those in the question, convert once at the end; if an answer looks unreasonable, check the sign in .
